Getting Started
What is Consult STAT?
Consult STAT is a specialist access platform that connects you directly with board-certified specialist physicians for remote consultations. We exist to close the gap between your PCP visit and the months-long wait for a specialist appointment — giving you fast, trusted guidance when you need it most.
How does Consult STAT work?
You tell us what's going on by filling out a short intake form. We review your case, and if it's a fit, a specialist reaches out — usually within a few hours. You get a clear answer and a next step. You pay $99 after your consult is complete.
Do I need to create an account?
No — you do not need an account to use Consult STAT. Just be sure to select SMS as your communication preference during intake. If you choose a more secure option (secure message or web browser), you will need to create an account after you've been matched.
When are you available?
Our specialists are available 7am–9pm, 7 days a week. If you submit an intake after hours, it will be reviewed by 9am the following morning. Our physicians maintain active clinical practices and may occasionally be away. If your specialist is temporarily unavailable, you'll be notified after submitting your intake and told when to expect a response.
What if I need to speak to a specialist after hours?
You can submit an intake at any time. After-hours submissions are reviewed by 9am the following morning. If your concern is urgent or you believe it may be an emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
What do I do in an emergency?
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. Consult STAT is not an emergency service.
Is Consult STAT available outside of Massachusetts?
Not at this time. Our physicians are licensed to practice in Massachusetts only, and all patients must be located in Massachusetts at the time of their consult.
Our Specialists
Who are your doctors?
Every physician on Consult STAT is a board-certified specialist in active practice who lives and works in your community. You can read their full bios on our
Doctors page.
Why specialists only? Why not PCPs or generalists?
Your PCP is your home base — we're not here to replace that relationship. Where the system breaks down is getting to a specialist. The typical wait for a specialist appointment is 4–6 months. Consult STAT exists to close that gap: fast, trusted access to the specialist layer that's hard to reach.
What specialties do you offer?
What if my issue doesn't match one of your specialties?
No charge. We'll let you know we weren't the right fit, and where possible, we'll suggest what type of specialist to look for.
Can you address pediatric concerns?
Yes — our ENT and orthopedic specialists regularly see pediatric patients. For patients under 18, a parent or legal guardian must complete the intake form and be present during the consultation. Our gastroenterology offering is for adults (18+) only.
Can the doctors prescribe medications?
Prescribing may be possible depending on the situation and the physician's clinical judgment. This is determined on a case-by-case basis during your consult. If a prescription is needed and appropriate, your specialist will guide you through next steps.
The Consult
How will my specialist contact me?
You choose your preferred communication method during intake: text message (SMS), secure messaging (mobile app), or web browser (desktop). Your specialist will use whatever format makes the most sense for your situation — a quick text exchange, a photo review, or a phone or video call.
What happens at the end of my consult?
Every consult ends with one of three clear next steps: You're good — monitor at home and check back if symptoms change. Come see me — your specialist can see you in person at their practice, typically within 48 hours, and we'll help coordinate. Go to the ER — your specialist provides you notes from your visit, and will be available should the ER have questions for them.
Will my specialist follow up?
Yes. After your consult, your specialist checks in to see how you're doing. Not a form or an automated message — a real follow-up from the doctor who helped you.
Will you coordinate with my PCP?
Yes, with your permission. Your PCP remains your primary relationship, and we want them to be informed. We can efax notes and consult summaries to your PCP and speak with them directly if needed.
Is my information secure?
Yes. Consult STAT, along with our messaging platform, Spruce Health, handles your health information in accordance with HIPAA. If you choose SMS, please note that standard text messaging is not a fully secure channel, and so you'll have the option to select secure message or web browser instead.
Pricing & Payment
How much does it cost and what's included?
$99 per consult, charged after your consult is complete. That includes your specialist consultation, any follow-up questions on the same issue within 7 days, and a doctor check-in after the consult. A new issue is a new consult.
What if I need to be seen in person?
If your specialist recommends an in-person visit, they can see you at their own practice — typically within 48 hours. In-person visits are billed separately through the specialist's practice and can go through your insurance.
Do I need insurance? Can I use my insurance?
You do not need insurance to use Consult STAT. The $99 consult fee is a flat cash-pay fee and is not billed to insurance — but we do accept HSA and FSA payments. If you need an in-person follow-up, that visit is billed separately through your specialist's practice and can go through your insurance.
If I'm told to go to urgent care or the ER, do I still pay?
Yes — the $99 covers the specialist's time and clinical guidance, regardless of the outcome. If you have any questions or concerns,
please reach out.
What if you can't match me with a specialist?
You pay nothing. We'll let you know, and whenever possible, we'll suggest where to go next.
Do you offer a membership or subscription model?
Not yet, but we're exploring it. Right now, every consult is $99 with no commitment. If you're interested in ongoing specialist access through a membership model, we'd love to hear from you —
let us know.
About Consult STAT
Is Consult STAT a medical practice?
Consult STAT is a technology and coordination platform that connects patients with independent, licensed physicians. The physicians provide medical services independently under their own licensure and through their own existing practices. Consult STAT does not itself provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Is Consult STAT a replacement for my PCP?
No. We deliberately do not include primary care. Your PCP is your home base. We're the specialist layer — here to help when you need fast access to a specialist for a more complex or specific concern.
How is this different from urgent care?
Urgent care is great for testing, x-rays, and acute issues. But you won't see a specialist there — and for many concerns, you'll be told to follow up with one anyway. With Consult STAT, you talk directly to a specialist for a similar price, plus if needed, an in-person appointment within 48 hours.
